March 19, 2008 - Left Tail Light Repair

Gas Door Mechanism

This is part of the damaged gas door mechanism which is actually the left tail light on these old Cadillacs. The left tail can be unlatched and lifted away to expose the gas filler opening. The picture shows the break where this hinge was attached to the tail light chrome bezel.

May 3, 2008 - Rebuilt Parts

Heater Blower

The right hand side heater blower repainted. Completely dismantled, stripped and cleaned, the unit awaits for the new paint to dry. (Will need a new 6 VDC motor, too).

Master Brake Cylinder

New master cylinder after painting and installation. Some of the original brake lines were in such good shape that they only needed to be cleaned. The one on the right hand side of this picture is the factory original line.

DC Generator

Rebuilt and repainted, the generator will wait some time before it is re-installed.

Starter Motor

This heavy motor needed only it's solenoid rebuilt. Otherwise it was in excellent shape. Here it is pictured after it was completed and repainted.

Dash Grill

This was a bonus. Needed only a new cigar lighter. Purchased one on eBay and got a excellent dash grill with it..total cost of $35.00..!!! Grill doesn't even need to be re-chromed....lighter and map light do.

Righthand Heater Box

This unit was completely dismantled, stripped, cleaned and repainted. Here it waits for the return of the re-cored heater element.

Heat/Vent Mechanism

This is the tricky mechanism that determines the amount of heat, fresh air and defrost that the heater box puts out. It is controlled by the two levers located on the left side of the dash grill.

Heater Box

With the core removed, the heater box is re-assembled for adjustments.

Heat/Vent Control

The mechanism was cleaned and adjusted before being re-installed. The system was completely malfunctioning because of this miss-adjusted system.

May 3, 2008 - New Parts

Firewall Rubber

Complete assortment of firewall grommets, gaskets and washers. Only one original part could not be found..needed to use a substitute grommet for the convertible harness at firewall.

Door and window

Weather-stripping for the doors, vents and windows were purchased from Steele Rubber. Excellent quality items that fit like the original.

Front End Rubber

Here is pictured an assortment of rubber gaskets for the head light, fog lights etc. All rubber and weather -striping on the Cadillac was replaced. Much of the original was damaged or too brittle to be effective.

Convertible Top

All the rubber needed to complete the convertible top.

Trunk and Cowel Weather striping

The picture includes trunk and front cowl seals among other various rubber.

Bumper and assorted rubber

Various components for the rear end of the car: License plate lens gasket, bumper to body weather stripping, rear quarter and pinch molding, etc....

New Rear Axle Bearing

This was a nightmare. The rear axle bearing that the car came with were not installed correctly...someone had installed an additional "spacer" ring on the outside of the right wheel bearing. This caused the brake drum to sit improperly on the axle shaft. In turn this damaged the keyway and caused me no end of trouble to remove and replace.

August 21, 2008 - Window Lifts and Power Seat Mechanism

Window Lifts and Power Seat Mechanism

Degreased and cleaned, the window lifts and power seat drive unit are equipped with new hydraulic cylinders.

Power Seat Unit

This is the mechanism which moves the power seat. It is hydraulically operated as are the windows and the convertible top. With a thorough cleaning, good lubrication and new cylinders there should be fewer problems to deal with when it comes to installation and testing.

August 21, 2008 - Electrical Wire Harness' - Although useable, the original wiring in the car was tattered and had multiple repairs. They were a problem waiting to happen. As such, all electrical harness are replaced with the correct cloth-coated and colored wiring:

Main harness

Although it will prevent many problems down the road, installing the new wiring harness will be a challenge.

Main Harness

Luckily the wires are labeled and charted. This makes it a little easier...but is still a challenge especially having to re-connect the original tail, parking and fog light bulbs and receptacles.

Fog Lamps

Fog lights are reassembled using the new electrical harness.

August 21, 2008 - Front Wheel Splash Guards

Front Wheel Dust Shields

Sandblasted and repainted, the mud guards will have new anti-squeak dust seals installed. (Stapled to the shield as per the originals).

Front Wheel Dust Shields

These will be installed once all work is complete on the engine bay and the front fenders are re-fitted.
